Partial Reinforcement and Resistance to Extinction
Kim Yon
Abstract
It seems to be a well-established fact tLat partial or intermittent reinforcement produce greater resistance to extinction than does consistent reinforcement.
Among the theories which have been so far, the aftereffect theories and discrimination hypothesis were considered in the light of the results of empirical data in this paper.
Mostly findings appear to have generally been interpreted as contrary to the discrimination hypothesis as sufficient explanation for the partial reinforcement effect, with the aftereffect hypothesis being partly true.
It is very probable that there is no single theory which can successfully account for all of the findings for partial reinforcement effect now that the most typical theories, stimulus-generalization and discrimination have been reviewed.
